ANSYS Provides an End-to-End Simulation Workflow for Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing (AM) joins materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer (ASTM F2792). In this way, AM allows levels of hierarchical, shape, material and functional complexities unequaled by conventional manufacturing technologies.

In the metal industry, AM successes are many:

Aviation: GE 3D-printed their 30,000th fuel nozzle tip for their LEAP engine in October 2018. Better fuel efficiency, weight reduction, and part consolidation were some of the benefits of using additive technologies;

Biomedical: Stryker offers implants integrating their Tritanium® In-Growth Technology, which features an additively manufactured porous structure that promotes bone in-growth and biological fixation;

Aerospace: Relativity Space has built Stargate, the largest metal 3D printer in the world that will be used to produce entirely 3D-printed rockets in a matter days instead of years;

Dental: 3DRPD has 3D-printed over 150,000 patient-specific removable partial dentures made of biocompatible cobalt-chrome alloy using the laser powder bed fusion process.

Add Granta MI to your toolbox for instant materials information

Granta MIFor the first time, engineers can gain instant, accurate access to the Granta materials database within ANSYS Workbench™, speeding up their materials selection and improving their workflows.

In late 2018, ANSYS, Inc. acquired Granta Design, the premier provider of materials information technology. Through the MI:Materials Gateway window within ANSYS Workbench, you can access validated materials information in several categories, including steel, plastics, and aerospace.

If you know which material you’re looking for, you can select it directly. Or you can search with keywords like “aluminum 6061,” and the material’s property datasheets will be shown to you. You can also ask Granta to show you materials with defined specs, like yield strength above or below a certain value. You can then compare and contrast different materials.

Tightly coupled rigid and flexible solvers that are powerful and fast allow engineers to study situations beyond what is possible in ANSYS RBD (Rigid Body Dynamics). Modal flexible, meshed flexible, and rigid parts can be tied together with standard joints and connections so accurate loadings on the components can be calculated.

This standalone solution for multibody dynamics and flexible multibody dynamics uses its own pre- and post-processor and solver. Pre-processing is integrated into ANSYS Mechanical via an ACT extension.

Maximizing Memory Performance for ANSYS Simulations

Memory, or RAM, is important when you’re configuring computers for high-performance computing (HPC). Computer performance is affected not only by the amount of RAM but also by the amount of bandwidth, or transfer speed, between the processor and the memory. The bandwidth is affected by the speed of the memory stick, but the way memory sticks are configured on the motherboard is even more important.

CPUs can access information on multiple memory sticks in parallel through use of memory channels. Modern CPUs can access between 1 and 8 memory channels simultaneously (model specific). Not only does this capability affect the machines performance, but we have found that many computers are not configured to make use of all their memory channels, which hampers performance.
